Method statement generator
Build a safe-work method statement from a trade template. Free · exports as .txt.
A method statement tells everyone on site how a task will be done safely. Pick a trade template, fill in the five sections, and export a compliant document ready for your tender submission or safety file.
Writing a procedure people will follow
Write the procedure in the order the work is done, one step per line, in plain words the supervisor can read out at a toolbox talk. Each step should say what is done, with what equipment, and what has to be in place first, such as a permit, an inspection or an isolation. Name the hold points where work stops until someone competent has checked it: an excavation before entry, a scaffold before use, formwork before a pour.
Link the method statement to the risk assessment. Every significant hazard in the HIRA for this activity should be controlled somewhere in the procedure, and the PPE listed should match what the assessment calls for. Include what happens in an emergency on this particular site: who raises the alarm, where the first-aid kit and the trained first-aider are, and how an injured person will be moved to the nearest hospital.
Questions
- What is a construction method statement?
- A safe-work method statement (sometimes a 'safe work procedure') sets out how a specific construction activity will be carried out safely — the scope, the step-by-step method, the PPE required, who supervises it and their competency, and the emergency procedures. It's a core health-and-safety document under the Construction Regulations 2014.
- Is a method statement required for a tender?
- Very often, yes. Public- and private-sector construction tenders routinely list method statements as returnable documents, and a principal contractor is required to have them as part of the health-and-safety plan under the OHS Act and Construction Regulations 2014. Submitting well-structured method statements is also a mark of a competent contractor.
- What must a method statement include?
- At minimum: the scope of the activity, the method or procedure step by step, the personal protective equipment required, supervision and competency requirements, and emergency procedures. This generator prompts for each of those sections and produces them in a standard order.
